Renting a car is usually a requirement if you are travelling. It is often difficult to get around if you don’t’ have access to a vehicle. In general renting a car is fairly straight forward but there are some things that you are going to want to keep in mind. Finding the right rental car will help to make your trip much more enjoyable.
The first thing that you are going to want to do when you are selecting a rental car is to decide what kind of car you need. This will be largely determined by both the number of people who will be travelling in the car and personal preference or one that fits the location (for example, I like renting an exotic car in Las Vegas).
It is all well and good to find a rental company that offers a cheap price on a compact car but it won’t do you any good if you need a car to carry six adults. Other than that choosing the type of car that you want is a personal preference.
It is also a good idea to think about any other features that you are going to need in your rental car. Most cars come with the standard features that you would expect of that type of car. They usually have a stereo and automatic transmission, most but not all will have air conditioning. Other items like a GPS navigation system are normally not included in the price and will need to be booked separately. Deciding what features are important to you ahead of time will make it easier to get the car that you need.
Once you know what you want you are going to need to compare the prices offered by the different agencies. This can be done fairly easily online but there are some things that you are going to need to keep in mind. The biggest issue is to make sure that you are comparing apples to apples. Obviously you are going to want to make sure that you are comparing the same type of care with the same features, but there are also other things you are going to have to look for. Some companies have surcharges that are added to the cost of the rental, others have a minimum charge for mileage. When comparing prices you need to make sure that you are comparing the total cost of renting the car.
After you have decided on a car it is important that you actually read the rental contract. Most people don’t bother because it is such a long document but it is important, you don’t want any nasty surprises. The thing you especially need to be aware of is how much insurance coverage you have and what is actually covered. If it isn’t adequate, and it often isn’t, you will want to purchase additional insurance.
